New Computer from Dell

I was just sent an e-mail advertising a new computer system from Dell: the XPS One 24 Desktop. I’m looking for a new development computer, and I prefer to use Dell, as I have had very good experiences with them in the past. Does anyone have any feedback on this system?

One of the downsides to this system I am already aware of, and that is that you are limited in terms of the amount of customization that’s available. However, I’m not quite ready to buy, and it will likely be another 6 months before I do, so maybe by then, that issue will have been resolved, at least somewhat. But are there any other issues with this system I should be aware of?

That XPS One 24 (does anyone else think that “one 24″ is a stupid name? What was wrong with “1-24″ or “124″? “One 24″ reads weird) seems like an overpriced executive toy. Granted, it meets the space requirements you have (very small footprint), but why not get a more powerful laptop? Or a smaller form factor? Dell has a small form factor desktop, the Studio Hybrid 140G. There’s also a Studio Slim. Probably not as high-powered as the XPS you were looking at but still can probably do way more than your current laptop if you max these desktops out. And there’s also Shuttle cases (and other manufacturers). Those things are really quite small. You could probably fit them IN your desk drawers, just leave it a little open for air and cables. ;)

And if you really want one of these all-in-ones, don’t forget Sony, I’m pretty sure they make a couple comparable models. I don’t know if HP or Compaq are in this market. And of course, there’s the iMac, your favourite! ;)
